Maxine Kumin has published fifteen volumes of poetry, as well as novels, short stories, a memoir, and essays on country living. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1973, the Poets' Prize in 1994, the Aiken/Taylor Award for Modern Poetry in 1995, and the Ruth E. Lilly Prize in 1999. Critics have compared her work to that of Thoreau and Frost.

In a writer career spanning five decades, Russell Banks has published five short story collections, nine novels, and four poetry collections. His fiction captures the experiences of working class people who live in the Northeast, and often deals with issues of family conflict, addiction, economic hardship, and racism. He was chosen to be the New York State Author for 2004-2006. His novels include The Darling, Cloudsplitter, The Rule of the Bone, The Sweet Hereafter and Affliction, the last two of which have been made into films.

Cathy McDowell, a former ACC student and graduate of Skidmore College's Universiy Without Walls, has studied the criminal justice system and worked in three New York State prisons. She is an advocate of restorative justice practices and was a contributor to North Country Public Radio's award winning "Balancing Justice Series." Her book, the waiting place, is a collection of essays, stories and prose poems, that gives voice to the inmates and families who are caught in the jaws of the dehumanizing American penal system.
